Chairperson Carli Kooper visited cooperation partner Mili Chana in Jakarta in the summer of 2011. First, they went to see Susanah in Salatiga. Susanah is the first student to receive the Heliconia Scholarship (apart from Mili), and studies Accountancy at the Universitas Satya Wacana. Salatiga is a quiet and green town, offering a nice study environment. Susanah enjoys her student life very much and showed Carli and Mili around at the campus. It was very nice meeting each other again and after spending two days together we all felt that we knew each other even better than before.
Back in Jakarta, Mili and Carli spend most of their time visiting the shelters where we will select new students for the Heliconia Scholarship. They went to Panti Asuhan (children's shelter) Dorkas, where Carli and Mili met in 2007 and where Mili and Susanah grew up. It was lovely meeting all the girls and care takers again. After Dorkas, they visited Panti Asuhan Pa van der Steur and Panti Asuhan Hati Suci, both in Jakarta. For the academic year 2012-2013 we intent to support two new students. Selection of candidates is always done in consultation with Mili, the boards of the shelters, the children and their remaining relatives. It was therefore nice to pay a visit now that Carli could also join. Veronica and Sherly from Hati Suci will likely be selected for the upcoming year, because both are scoring excellent grades at high school and are driven to continue studying at university next year.
Apart from working for the Heliconia Scholarship Foundation, there was also time for leisure. Mili and Carli had a lovely time catching up with each other, visiting sights and having home spa evenings. They are looking forward to working and growing together even more and are already looking forward to the next visit!
