Labi
Law (2019)

Hello, my name is Labi. I am from Vincentius Putra Shelter located in Central Jakarta. Now I am a student at Tarumanagara University in the Law study program. I started college in 2019 and I have the target to be able to graduate from university in three and a half years, which will be in 2023. I feel very happy because the Heliconia Scholarship Foundation wants to help me with tuition fees, and I feel so excited because Heliconia gives challenges to the students to get a GPA (grade point average) of 3.25 minimum, which makes me very motivated in learning. Heliconia really changed my life, because I used to think that I would only be a high school graduate. Thanks to Heliconia I can now be more confident because I can study for a Bachelor’s Degree.

I thank God for His blessings and also for my hard work, this semester my GPA is 3.45. I also want to say a very big thank you to Heliconia for always supporting me. When I have a problem or anything, Naomi always wants to hear my problems, thank you very much.

First, I will tell you how much fun I had studied during this semester. I think the 5th semester was pretty tough for me. There are even some of my classmates who are forced to remedial some courses this semester. Because many courses are not related to my major. Such as the Legal Proficiency Training Education course, in this course, we learned about international relations concerning export and import and the procedures to carry out trade and purchases following the rules or provisions of international law. There are also courses from other faculties such as Forensic Psychology from the psychology faculty and Presentation and Negotiation course from the communication science faculty. But I am grateful for the difficulty and severity of this semester, I learned to even study harder and be more diligent.

There were so many assignments. In the Legal Proficiency Training Education course, our class was combined with students from the economics faculty, so we were formed into several groups and law students had to teach economics students about how to resolve cases in court. We were also asked to make a video regarding the situation in court, we were told to play a role in the court. I prepared the script and created the file draft. I was annoyed with the economics students in my group. They were only needed to read but there were still mistakes, so there were many deductions in grades. In courses from other faculties, I honestly didn’t understand. But after class, I always asked about the material that was taught by the lecturer. In this course, I was taught how to compose scientific articles. I paid attention and actively asked questions because there were many things taught in this course that will be useful for my thesis. I’m happy having courses from other faculties because I get new friends.

Student Council (BEM) activities were hampered due to this pandemic. Some events and work programs are not implemented, but for meetings, providing social assistance, and leadership training we still do it face-to-face, to get to know each other better within the organization. This semester, many Law Student Council from other universities invited us to visit and discuss how we run this organization, what are the obstacles, and what makes it fun. I feel sad because it may be my last year in this organization, so I will try to help as much as I can. Because in the 7th semester, I might be very busy with many assignments and also internships. Thank you to Heliconia who always supports me in any way, I appreciate this. Thank you Carli, I hope we are all healthy always and always in God’s protection, both our family, work and career.

The education that we are currently undergoing is education in the modern era due to the emergence of the COVID-19 virus which has made learning in all schools and universities into online learning. Previously, learning was taught in schools, now learning is carried out at home. There are several obstacles that are caused by online learning, students find it very difficult to understand what is conveyed by the teachers. We find it very difficult to learn when there is a network problem or a broken laptop or other technical problem. It’s difficult for us to learn. One of the difficulties I experienced in online learning was trying to understand what the lecturers said, I overcame that difficulty by re-learning the materials provided by the lecturers. During lectures, I usually write down the subject of discussion, or terms that I do not understand. So that later I can look for it on the internet or reference books to study it again.

There was one incident that I experienced last semester, my scores were almost not inputted by the lecturer in the Transnational Law course. The lecturer misread and entered my name wrongly, so my name was not included in the assessment. My student ID Number was duplicated with the wrong name. As a result, my name was not registered in the exam and it was started that I had never submitted the assessment. In the end, I tried to clarify the matter to the lecturer, and the lecturer gave us an additional task. Luckily I was the first student who finished the task, so the lecturer gave me an appreciation and I was recognized for always taking the exam.

There was also another obstacle, my laptop charger was damaged. I was confused about attending college, but fortunately, I still can join online classes with my cellphone, my mother also will buy a laptop charger so that I could attend lectures well.

I also want to thank in particular and especially the Heliconia Foundation for the financial support and support from my brothers and sisters who have guided me so that I can study well until this semester. Thank you for all the attention that is always given to me and my friends, I pray that every obstacle that exists in this foundation can be resolved properly. And I pray to God that the people who are members of this heliconia foundation are always given health, generosity of fortune, and all the best. I also pray that this pandemic will end soon so that we can carry out our activities as well as possible.

The 3rd semester was very tough because the learning process was still online. I had to study with all limitations, sometimes constrained by the network, and sometimes I didn’t understand the materials which were presented. Moreover, this semester, the new curriculum was implemented in my faculty. I was required to study subjects that I shouldn’t need to take. Honestly, during online learning, sometimes I complain about the internet network, and about the speed of speaking by the lecturer team. But despite all of that, I tried to learn more after the classes were finished. When I study, I always take notes of some important things, and then I will learn them again. As a result, in the 3rd semester, I got a GPA of 3.57. It’s not as high as the last semester, but I will look for a way to understand the online learning process, so I will get better results. Because of the new curriculum, there is an opportunity for me to finish college in 3 and a half years, instead of four years. There is also a new rule that in the 5th semester, the students will be required to choose between studying one semester at another faculty or doing an internship.

This semester, I officially became a member of the Students Council. I took part in the research and the development of the department. The tasks which will be carried out by this department are to examine some cases in the community, dissect the cases so the readers who are not from the law faculty can understand, the right legal basis for the perpetrators, and so on. I am also in charge to create and publish Instagram stories about short lessons, articles, and basic legal definitions. Together with the team, I also make the learning modules and write contradictory articles. On the last of October 2020, the Students Council held a live program due to the pandemic, we decided to focus more on socialization. In this program, I was trusted to be the vice chairman of the committee. This program is arguably a well-executed program.

I also applied for a scholarship that was organized by the university for outstanding students. Before I registered for this scholarship, I forgot to tell Naomi and Sherly at first, so I apologized to them. I hope this pandemic will pass quickly so we can go to campus as we used to do, and be able to interact with my friends again.

This 2nd semester I felt a bit unpleasant because in this semester many campus activities were done from home by using online media or the internet. Because of Covid 19, the Indonesian government issued a regulation to study from home. We must use a mask and keep social distance to reduce the spread of this virus. To be honest, when I heard about this regulation regarding studying from home, I thought I would be foolish if I did not find alternatives or other ways to understand the materials that I’ve learned.

Indeed, if we talk about the use of technology for online learning, it’s cool, because we can learn what was developed in the world today. But in my opinion, this online learning is very ineffective, because sometimes we may lack concentration about what is explained by the lecturer. Honestly, when I did online learning, there were many materials that I couldn’t understand. I also think that if the next several months we still do this method of learning,  I will definitely not make it. So the only way I can do this is when the online class is over, I will ask about the material that I learn that day, and I will learn it by myself. If there is something I don’t understand I will ask in the next online class.

This semester, my friends and I from the Law faculty were planning on selecting new student council chairpersons. I am a member of the committee, so I use this opportunity to learn the process of how to be the head of the student council. So maybe later I also can become the next candidate.

The university website has programming problem recently, so I couldn’t check my grades for the 2nd semester. Hopefully, my grades are better than the previous semester.

Getting a GPA score of 3.47 in the odd semester was not something easy for me, being a freshman in the Law major. My seniors said that in the early semesters it would be very difficult to get a good GPA. The lecturers also said the same thing to us. As the class president, I said to my friends that the words said by the seniors didn’t need to be concerned, but we should make a good spirit in the study and make those words from seniors as our reference, we should study even more so we will get a good GPA.

In this odd semester, I also got many good friends, who are my classmates and some of my seniors. I am very happy when I can get closer to them because from them I can learn more about Law. When there is something I do not understand about a course, I can ask them and they will help me. There are also some of my friends who feel happy when talking to me, especially when we talk about life. Many of my classmates are from rich families, but they never experienced pure happiness in life.

I was also busy with a number of activities at campus, one activity is that I participated in the BEM organization (Student Council) in my faculty. All Law students got the invitation to register for the election. Total registrants were around 260. A week after the registration time, we were scheduled for interviews. Only 60 students would be accepted. One week after the interview, the faculty issued an announcement, I saw my name on the list. I passed the interview.

A month later after the election, from October 6th to 8th 2019, we participated in Leadership Training activities. There were 60 students who were accepted, but only 57 students took part in this training. After the training, we were declared to be officially young members of the Law faculty.

Besides joining the student council, I also had many assignments in class. Honestly, I was so bored when I was given a lot of assignments. Some of my friends asked the Lecturer, why should we repeat the material so often. The Lecturer only answers that many of us do not understand the material, and therefore the material continues to be repeated.

From February 6th to 8th 2020, the students in Law Sociology class went to a village to conduct field research about how people in Lampung apply the rules in their society. The conclusion was that the people in Lampung are friendly, and indeed many of those are very obedient to the rules. I also asked a man to what extent the residents are aware of the laws in Lampung province. He answered that the community obeys the law, and they will get the consequences if they disobeyed the law because the leaders here can quickly make a new rule for us.

Basically, during my first semester, I feel very happy because I have been through many things. Whether is good or bad I still enjoy the experiences and I am grateful. I am grateful when I am still given a problem from God because the ancients said that experience is the best teacher. As long as we struggle,  there will be something to be achieved. There is one novel that I have read, I quote a very good sentence “if you want something, try to get it because the universe will also help you to achieve what you have fought as long as you still want to fight”.

First I want to tell you how happy I was when I was accepted as a new student at university. There were various kinds of feelings when I was welcomed as a new student, first I felt very happy because I get new friends, and felt so happy because I will be an intellectual man by joining the university. My happiness arose when I think that I am a lucky person because there are many children out there who can’t get this scholarship. I’m enthusiastic because one day I will be an independent man and can solve my own problems in life without depending on anybody anymore. I’m also very tired because there are so many activities at the university, but that is exactly what I will face during college. Those are the feelings that I felt as a new student at university.

When I received the schedule and started my activities at campus, I was confused because the schedule was different from my schedule in vocational high school. There were eight hours of study a day in high school, but there are only two hours of study a day in university.

The first time I entered the class, my friends in the class chose me to be The Class Leader. It motivated me to study more by doing the tasks that are given to me. The next day I was upset by a lecturer because he denied my question. From that moment, I started to dislike that subject, but somehow I still respect his policies and decided to join his class. His teaching system is very ineffective, he gave us five titles and divided us into five groups to do a presentation. It’s ineffective because we only learn about the topic of our presentation and don’t learn about the other topics that other groups learn.

The next experience was when I joined a competition event among new students in university called Constitutional Drafting. In this event we learn about the basics of Law, such as Governing Body, Management body, we were also required to take part in an activity called Leadership Training. In Leadership Training, we were taught to not get angry easily at others, to be more inferior, and to be more respectful of one another, and therefore I participated in this activity with great enthusiasm. I was even more, happier when my friends and I become The Champion of the Constitutional Drafting Competition.
